Paunovic Answers Serbia’s Call
Veljko Paunovic has been appointed as the new head coach of Serbia after the Balkan federation turned to him with the hope that he could help secure qualification for the World Cup, which will take place next summer in Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The Serbian coach will lead the national team for the next two matches against England and Latvia, with the possibility of continuing if the team reaches the playoffs and the final phase of the World Cup.
Ten years after winning the U-20 World Cup with Serbia, his country has once again called on Paunovic, who did not hesitate to help his compatriots in pursuit of what would be a historic achievement. Despite the difficulty of the challenge, Paunovic has set to work with the clear goal of earning good results in the upcoming matches and overtaking Albania — a team currently one point ahead in the standings and with a better chance of reaching the playoffs.
Paunovic has felt the warmth of the Serbian fans, who have been calling for his appointment in recent weeks, as well as the support of players he already knows well — many of whom were part of the squad that won the most important title in the country’s football history, the U-20 World Cup in New Zealand in 2015.
With significant experience at club level and after making history with teams such as Chivas de Guadalajara, Chicago Fire, and Real Oviedo, it is now time to bring to the Serbian national team the competitive spirit that has always defined Veljko Paunovic’s sides.
The first challenge will come at Wembley against England on November 13 — a tough match, but one that greatly excites Paunovic, who is determined to give Serbian football a joy that would go down in history.
